VNF and AUTF sign a partnership agreement

As part of the International Week of Transport and Logistics Innovation (SITL), Voies navigables de France and the Association of Freight Transport Users signed an agreement in mid-September which aims to accelerate the conversion of shippers. and companies using the transport of goods to own logistics as part of the FRET21 approach, and more particularly to river logistics. In Paris, Porte de Versailles, this trade fair for the transport of goods covers the entire logistics chain through many areas of expertise, and the fact that Thierry Guimbaud, CEO of VNF, and Fabrice Accary, CEO of the 'AUTF, combining their forces shows, in the current context of global warming, that river transport responds to a marked desire on the part of shippers to use transport solutions that emit less CO2. Moreover, within the two entities, we are well aware that water transport offers significant traffic development prospects thanks to the modernization of the infrastructure underway. This agreement only strengthens the close collaboration that exists between the two players, but will above all make it possible to accelerate the modal shift from road to rail or waterway, within the FRET21 framework.

FRET21: a support system for reducing the environmental impact

Initiated by the AUTF and Ademe, the FRET21 support system is aimed at companies so that solutions are found in reducing the environmental impact of their activities, and helping them build more sustainable supply chains. This voluntary commitment approach encourages companies to define a target for reducing CO2 emissions, and the concrete actions to achieve it. In addition, they can enhance the environmental performance of their logistics optimization actions as well as the energy efficiency of alternatives to diesel.

The objectives of the partnership

Initially, the idea is to promote the advantages of the river, in particular its good environmental performance with the shippers who are members of the AUTF. And then to encourage shippers in contact with VNF, and in particular those who benefit from the modal shift assistance plan (PARM) to become more involved in modal shift by adhering to the FRET21 approach.

PARM: financial support

The modal shift assistance plan provides financial support for companies wishing to integrate the waterway into their logistics chains at each stage of setting up a river project: assistance in carrying out logistics studies, in experimentation river transport and the acquisition of handling equipment and infrastructure. For 2021-2022, € 12.5 million in funding is earmarked for this mechanism for the 5 years of its implementation. Other funding partners, in particular the Regions, are also likely to participate in the PARM, which could ultimately increase the overall budget available up to a maximum of € 20 million.

"The objectives and performance contract - a roadmap signed with the State and which sets an ambitious course for the next 10 years - provides in particular for an increase in the volume of river freight by half (compared to 2020), ie to reach more than 75 Mt of goods transported by river. This partnership with the AUTF should help reach more businesses, raise awareness and promote the strengths of the river in a context of the necessary energy transition in the transport sector ", underlines Thierry Guimbaud, Managing Director of Voies navigables de France. "The action of our association is part of a global approach to improving the economic and environmental performance of logistics chains, in the service of business competitiveness. We are indeed convinced that shippers have a major role to play in improving the environmental performance of transport ", explains Fabrice Accary, Director General of the Association of Freight Transport Users.
